WATER POWER.

RIGHTS TO BE LEASED. STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. [ar TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION*. ] \ Hokitika, Friday. The Prime Minister was waited upon at Bimu to-day by a very large gathering of miners, who brought before him the necessity for granting the application of a syndicate for developing an electric power watei supply for Rimu Flat and adjoining terraces. Strong representations were made on this subject, arid it was pointed out that the granting of this application meant the opening up of very extensive and hitherto unworkable areas, which have been proved to be highly payable, but so far unworkable, owing to the difficulty of getting water at sufficient altitude. . In reply. Sir Joseph said the promise made by the Mines Department, to have the scheme reported on by experts, would be carried out. The former policy of the Government to retain control of the available water power for electric purposes was found impracticable, owing to the amount involved. Legislation would be introduced next session giving the Government power to lease water rights t-o companies;, with proper safeguards. ' Sir Joseph said lie considered the matter introduced by the deputation of vitai importance to the Dominion, and he was glad to expound the views of the Government thereon.
