ENCOURAGING FISHERIES.
We hope that Mr. Millar will invit pressingly to New Zealand those r< preservatives of Scottish fisherme who are now visiting Australia There is no coast on the neighbout ing continent which offers bette prospects for the establishment c fisheries than does our own, an there are many parts where it wool be easy to open coast-wise land fo fisher-settlements, and thus to unit agriculture with the fishing indus try. It is one of the incongruitie of colonial life that while the sea swarm with fish, and our populatio
have a high purchasing power, it id practically impossible to obtain constant and varied supplies of this good and wholesome food- What *t« wanted is the placing of our local fishing industry* upon the same relation to other industries hat it occupies at Home. To do this trawling ought not only to be allowed, but to be cncouraged in all open waters outside a reasonable : coastdrawn limit, and the immigration "of the true British fishing folk should be systematically encouraged There appears to be at present a unique opportunity for getting into touch with desirable Scottish fishermen who contemplate emigration, and it is much to be hoped that Mr. i Millar will not.miss it. ;
