Dun- , 'edim- the other day, and created a good deal" of interest. The .'apparatus, was .two- -horses, '- arid : consists ' of a • large "ndppei^oj:.' tank ','. "iii -two compart- ; ments, one of which contains tar," and the ' :■/ ■..'■■other V sand. To the - tar tank a firebox ' is fitted, and the whole_ is mounted on a lorry ; carriage., Four down pipes fitted : with ; stop valves "communicate with' the bottom of the tank, and the discharge of tar is regulated and controlled by the driver on the coach box. The tar runs on the road through perforations in a horizontal distributing pipe a few inches above the ground. Behind the distributing pipe .is a brush working with . reciprocating motion, and this operates on the tar. A ■ ■■:,_ stationary brush is fitted directly, behind '.' the moving one, as an extra surety of th*. ■_- spreading of the tar. ■■■< Both brushes may be lifted clear of the road when desired. The sand is distributed from the ■ ,'■ •rear by means of a, revolving drum with ■.:,•■-adjustable blades. ;'-The centrifugal force • thus set tip - maintains a. constant and regular distribution. > The salient features • -of the invention would appear to be its regulation of the tar and eand distribution, the control the driver has over the mechanism from his seat, the simplicity ' "of . the working parts, and its steady manner of working. It is claimed that the apparatus works equally well on the level ~'..•, and on steep gradients. The machine can be used with a steam roller for making . tarred macadam on. an /extensive scale. The section of the public present at the ■;: vi'l2.l a street ixi the-process; of ■'•:-, being, thoroughly, tarred and sanded simultaneously. The work was done excellently and with great rapidity, and by one mifi, '"the' driver, who seemed to find it as- easy ../as. r and somewhat similar to, driving a 'water-cart. The trial '. was successfully : --; carried out. 1 • . . j
