CHURCH OF ENGLAND'S MEN'S

SOCIETY.

The St. Matthew's branch of tho Church of England Men's .Society spent an enjoyable evening on Tuesday in. listening to an account of the Rev. A. Fowler's repent trip to England, a graphic description being given, of St. Paul's Cathedra!. This society is making ' steady progress. At last meeting some new arrivals from England were introduced and welcomed. In this way the organisation will do good work."

NO-LICENSE LEAGUES. A largely-attended meeting of tho city and suburban Nd-lioehse Leagues was held in the Y.M.C.A. lecture-hall on Tuesday evening, for tho purpose of hearing the Rev. F. "W. Isitt, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, explain tho suggested proposals of the party. Tho chairman of the executive of the alliance (tho Rev. J. Dawson) was also present, and the Rov. Geo. Bond presided. After considerable discussion, most of the proposals wore adopted, few were amended, and all wore referred to the Colonial Convention.

PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and Prevention,of Cruelty to Animals was held on Monday afternoon. The inspector read an exhaustive report on the work done during the past month, and the secretary reported that 19 cases had been dealt with in the women's and children's departments.

WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION. The ordinary meeting of tho Women's Christian Temperance Union was held yesterday afternoon, a large number of members being present. The president (Mrs. Dewar) occupied the chair. Preliminary arrangements were made for tho forthcoming convention, to bo held during the second week of next month; A largo gathering is expected, delegates coming from all parts of the Dominion. A report wao received from a resident in the Bay of Islands district stating that over 300 Maoris had signed tho pledge.

NEWTON SCHOOLS COMMITTEE. The mouthly meeting of the Newton Schools Committee was hold laafc evening. The chairman (Mr. C. H. Sexton) presided, and Messrs. W. S. Smith, J. M. White, R. .Tames, 11. Sohoficld, 0. Warrington. & Healey. W. J. Holdsv.orth, and G. Bead were also present. Newton Bast School: The headmaster of the Newton East school (Mr-. Metsx-) reported that there were 596 scholars on the roll, 799 being the average attendance. Mr. Metge further reported that 11 pupils Lid secured honours in the recent school examinations, the most successful being Master Harold E. E'lHott, who was awarded a district junior scholarship, entitling him to free education at the Auckland Grammar School for three years. Mr. Metge'e special report on the teaching staff was considered very satisfactory, and it was decided to send a letter congratulating him on the good results obtained. ,„,',, . Newton West School: The headmaster of the Newton West school (Mr. Webber) reported that 786 pupils were on the roll, the average attendance being 633. Grey Lynn School: A report from the headmaster of the new Grey Lynn school (Mr. J. Campbell) shewed that there were 162 children on the roll, the average attendance being 123— a largo increase on the attendance previous to the holidays, and the. headmaster is hopeful of a still further advancement. The sanitary arrangements in connection with this school not being considered satisfactory, it was decided to write to the Board of Education on the matter. A Recommendation: Six names were submitted for recommendation for the position of first assistant of the Newton .Wert school, and Mr. Hector K. Burns, 8.A., of the Normal School, was unanimously recommended to the Board of Education for appointment. Mr. Donald Mclnnes was recommended us an alternative.

Accounts amounting to £23- 5s Sd were passed tor payment. ;
