THE AUCKLAND GARRISON
CHAMPIONSHIPS.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION.
The boxing and wrestling tournament which has been inaugurated by the members of the Auckland Garrison and Non-Commis-sioncd Officers' Clubs, and tiro proceeds oi which are to be devoted to the erection of a gymnasium for tho men, was opened in the Drill Hall, Wellesley-street, last evening. Lieutenant-Colonel Wolfe, officer commanding tho Auckland district, in declaring tho function open, expressed a desire that tho various events might be fought out in the best spirit. There was a good attendance, ind amongst those present were Colonel Robin, chief of the general staff, and several of the officers attending tho present class of instruction. The boxing was of a most interesting character, and several fine exhibitions were witnessed. The wrestling events did not draw as many entries as the boxing, but the quality was there. The meeting was well conducted, and a noticeablo feature was the orderly manner in which the proceedings wore carried through. Air. A. C. do Lisle and Mr. Bray, of H.M.s. Encounter, gave every satisfaction as judges of tho boxing and wrestling events respectively. The tournament will bo concluded this evening, when the finals of tho various events will take place. Below are the results: — BOXING EVENTS. Feather-weight Championship: First round ot feather-weight championship—Sergeant A. ■ L. Tressider (King's College Cadets) beat Private T. Smith (Bearer Corps); Bugler Ballantyne (No. 1 G.A.V.) beat Private B. Bennett (N. 1 Natives); Private J. McGce (No. 1 Natives) beat Cadet C. Roberts (Eucn Cadets). Middle-weight Championship: First round—Private R. .McLean (College Rules) beat, Gunner A.. H. Morrison (R.N.Z.A.); Quartermaster-Sergeant .Turner (No. 1 G.A.V.) beat Private G. W. Cook (No. 2 Natives); Gunner Nelson (No. 1 G.A.V.J beat Gunner L. Poi (No. 1 G.A.V.). Light-weight Championship: First round —Sergeant L. Rowles (No. o Natives) beat Gunner L. Poi (No. 1 G.A.V.); Gunner Harvey (No. 8 G.A.V.) beat Gunner C. Skinner (No. 9 G.A.V.). The meeting ot these two lads provided one of the best exhibitions of the evening. Heavy-weight Championship : *here were only two competitors for the heavy-weight championship—Corporal C. A. Cowan (No. 1 G.A.V.) mid Gunner .S. Moore (R.N.Z.A.). Moore acted on the aggressive for the majo. portion of the first round, but there were not many points of difference between tho competitors at the conclusion. Tin second round was very willing, and Cowan scored well, getting in a number of powerful body blows. During tho third round both men began to tire, but the judge was unable to separate them at tho finish, and ordered another round to be boxed. The fourth round was not as willing as its predecessors, and at t/he conclusion Mr. De Lisle declared the match a draw, a decision which met with hearty approval. WRESTLING EVENTS. Catch-as-catch-can: The wrestling was entirely confined to tho light-weight class, and several of the competitors showed considerable skill. The results of the firstround were as follows:—Trooper L. Nicholls (Auckland Mounted Rifles) beat Cadet C. Roberts (Eden Cadet Corps). Nicholls, who is 91b heavier than his opponent winning tho bout after two minutes' wrestling. Corporal A. Dunning (King's College Cadets) beat Private T. Smith (Bearer Corps); Colour-Sergeant Wilkes (King's College Cadets) beat ColourSergeant D. W. Law-sou (King's College (Cadets). Both lads displayed considerable skill, and Wilkes, who was taller and heavier than his opponent, threw him after 12 minutes' wrestling.
