EDUCATION BOARD'S ARCHITECT.
The Education Board yesterday appointed Mr. John Farrell architect, in the place of Mr. J. Mitchell, who recently resigned, the salary attaching to the position being £500 a, year and actual travelling expenses. Twenty-four applications were received for the position, these coming from all parts of the colony, while one eam« from Sydney. The number was reduced by the committee to six, from whom the final appointment was made. Jst moving that the Board go into committee, the chairman (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) explained that the greater >>ar: of the Board's work was maintenance of school buildings, and it was important that the Board should have the advantage of the services of a man who understood the practical part of the business, one who was accustomed to looking after and arranging •work for foremen. It was usual to have a probationary period, but this was not necessar\ in the present case. The engagement was terminable by six months' notice on either side. Mr. Farrell, the new architect, who is best known as Mayor of the borough of Grey Lynn, is at present a builder and contractor. His application stated that he had received training in architectural drawing and building construction from Messrs. R. M. Fripn, C. S. Goldsbro*, the iate R. M. Watt. Mr. C. R. Viekerman, and Mr. J. Clinic.
