The loyalty of the Scotsman to his church a generation ago was illustrated by the Rev. Dr. Gibb at St. John's Church, Web lington, when referring to the late Mr. Alexander Hopkirk. According to the reverend gentleman deceased, in the vigour of his youth, used to swim the River Tweed in order to attend the weehlv prayer meeting. The river was bridged, but there was a toll which deceased at that time could ill afford to pay. Rather than miss tile service, he took the only alternative, and swam.
