The annual fixture between the representatives ot the Auckland Wednesday Rugby Union and the Rotorim Union was played at Alexandra Park yesterday afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired and a record attendance patronised the match, which resulted in favour of the visitors by 5 points (a converted try) to nil Mr. A. Campbell was referee and gave satisfaction to both teams. Edwards won the toss for Auckland and Kotorua kicked oil with the sun in their face. N. Flett returned and then neutral play followed. With a well-timed line kick Tango gained an advantage for his side. From the line-out lango secured, and a pretty piece of passing WO3 indulged in bv the Rotorua backs. Marshall, however, went. 'down to the rush finely and by determined tackling stopped the onslaught. The Rotorua team were then penalised fur offside play, which enabled Savory, with a good kick, to relieve to half-way, where the oval went out. From the line-out Niko secured, and the prettiest piece of passing witnessed during the day took place, the ball travelling between no less than seven players. Ultimately Edwards forced Morse out of bounds in Auckland's 25. Some keen line-out clay was then participated in, the Rotorua team holding their own against the formidable local pack. Eventually Niko secured, and passing to Tango the latter opened up 0 good forward rush, but Marshall gathered in the oval well and relieved with a well-timed kick. Some neutral pluv ensued, but Auckland were hotly pressing their opponents when halt-time sounded, neither side having scored. . Immediately alter/ the resumption of play the Rotorua team becabie very aggressive, but they missed several good opportunities through erraticpassing at the critical moment. The home team gradually returned play to midtielcl. From a scrum Tuora made a good opening and gave to Morse. The latter initiated a fine passing rush, but, a knock-on spoiled a chance. The visitors continued the attack in Auckland's 20, where from a scrum Niko again secured, and, making a clever feint on the blind side, scored the only trv.of the match. Tighe Mitchell converted with a 'beautiful kick. This gave the visitors a fivepoint advantage, and strenuous efforts were made by the home team to equalise the scores, but the' attacks were as strongly thrown backAlthough some good play ensued no further score resulted, Rotorua winning by b points to nil. NOTES. The game was contested in an excellent spirit, and on the whole was open and exciting. The Rotorua backs were very fast and got off some first-claw passing rushes, but erratic passing was the gene;al culmination of these fine runs, while the fine tackling of the Auckland backs also stopped a number of onslaughts. The local forwards more than held their own in the scram work and secured the ball in the majority of cases. The pick of the visiting backs were the Mitchell Brothers, Morse, Tango, and Niko, the latter especially doing some clever work. His try was the result of a very heady piece of work. Among the forwards Jenkins (wing), Panahou, Iharuha, Pcpanc, and Fitzgerald were the best The pack as a whole, however, lacked knowledge in the finer points of the game. Among the Auckland backs Edwards and Little were the best, the former especially playing a rattling game. He was the best back on the ground, hia defence being very solid. N. Flett and Howard weie weak in defence. Burton, at • halfback, played a good game, his defence being good, and he proved versatile in attack. Among 1 the forwards Savory stood out by himself and showed dashing form. Lewis made some good openings, and Jackson, Roscoe, and Pierce were the best of the others, but the latter unfortunately had to retire at the end of the first spell. NEXT WEDNESDAY'S MATCH. The Wednesday representatives will play the Star Football Club (the premier team of Taranaki) at Alexandra Park next Wednesday. The following team has been chosen by the selector (Mr. R. McGregor) to represent Auckland :—Fullback, W. Little; threequarters, J. Greenwood, 11. Marshall, J. Parks; five-eighths, J. Edwards (captain); halfback, H. Burton; wing-forwards, J. Roscoe and J.
