DISARMAMENT SCHEME.
THE HAGUE DISCUSSIONS. PRESS COMMENTS. By Telegraph.— Frees Association.—Copyright. (Received August 20, 9.3 p.m.) London, August 20. The resolutions of The Hague Conference on the armament question are the subject of much comment in the newspapers. The Standard states that the Prime Minister's preposterous disarmament scheme has resulted in a fiasco. The Pall Mall Gazette condemns the Government's willingness to sacrifice British interests while pursuing an absolutely unattainable ideal. The Westminster Gazette considers that Sir Edward Fry followed the only practical line of advance. The Scotsman and the Manchester Guardian suggest that Sir Edward Fry's offer to make naval construction the subject of private diplomatic negotiation is likely to infringe Parliament's power to control the naval policy.
