THE CARNEGIE MILLIONS
LIBRARY PROPOSAL FOR MOUNT EDEN. A projkct has been started ,in the Mount Eden borough to establish a library, and the . Ratepayers' Association, who have taken the initiative in the matter, addressed a' communication to Mr. Andrew Carnegie in September last, suggesting a donation in aid. In reply a request was made for certain information. The matter was placed before the Borough Council on Monday evening, the Council being asked to take into consideration the provision of a site and the necessary funds for the upkeep of a library, and also to supply the required details. . The association believed that local munificence would respond to an appeal, for the supplementing of any sum secured through the liberality of Mr. Carnegie. The members were divided in' their opinion no far as asking Mr. Carnegie for assistance was concerned.
Mr. Potter strongly supported the movement, contending that Mount Eden should not miss the opportunity to get a donation and a library for the district. The information asked for should be supplied. The Mayor considered that by filling in the form they were practically agreeing to go cap in -hand to Mr. Carnegie for a library. '.'.'-■, '. ~.
