As an example of Government valuations, the Farmers' Advocate quotes the case of a man who took up a 21 years' lease in the backblocks in dense bush, at a time when there were no roads and carriage was £2 a ton. During the term of the lease he spent in clearing £129; grass, £689 fencing, £600 total, £2280 and he and his neighbours gave the land for roads. The ranger valued the improvements at £932.
