The China famine relief fund now totals £1600. Another £50 bias been cabled,' making the total sent to "China £1400. • ;, Invekcakgill, Tuesday. A special meeting of the Southland Acclimatisation Society to-day considered and adopted, with i amendments,. the ' report of the special committee in regard to the netting, of trout in estuaries, etc. The committee . recommended that all • societies of the colony affected bo asked to consider the matter, and that the Government be approached with a view to having the whole matter investigated and reported on by the Chief Inspector of Fisheries. In the event of. netting being made lawful, the committee recommended that it be only allowed during October, November, December, and January. Hastings, Tuesday. At the Police Court yesterday four youths were committed for trial on . a charge of having committed , a criminal assault upon a girl under 16 years of age. Chmstchubch, Tuesday. The Christchurch police are carrying on a vigorous crusade against vagrants. Two men were to-day sent to gaol for three months, the magistrate, Mr. Bishop, expressing a determination to clear the streets of such characters.
