OTAHUHU PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE.

[from our own correspondent.] •A. well-attended meeting of the Otahuhu Progressive League was held on Monday, for tho .special purpose of ascertaining th© number of pupils likoly to attend in the event of technical classes being formed. in Otahuhu. . Mr. H. J. Hall, who ' presided, read a letter received from Mr. George George; dealing with classes for' carpentry and plumbing, giving particulars as to fees, etc., and:stating that if a sufficient number of pupils were enrolled and a suitable building for practical work rented, the Department would provide tools and equipment. The opinion of the meeting generally seemed to be that, provided the teaching was not entirely elementary, but was also adapted to apprentices nearly out of their time, there would be no difficulty in securing a sufficient number of pupils for the carpentry class at all events. Mr. T. Wilson, headmaster of the public'school, spoke ■in terms of warm commendation about tho teaching given in the manual training schools. The secretary took the names of a largo number of probable pupils, the majority of whom desired, instruction in carpentry, but classes for plumbing and for typewriting, . shorthand, and . book-keeping are also in demand.' It is intended, to hold another meeting later on, at which it is expected Mr. George will bo present. ... The members of the league considered a letter from Mr. J. E. Taylor, of Mangere, regarding the proposed Waitemata-Manukau Canal. Mr. Taylor has collected an amount of valuable information respecting the Otahuhu route, and desired to confer with the league on the matter, and by means of a public meeting create an active interest among the residents of the district as to the importance and advantage of the local route. It was decided to hold the meeting in about a fortnight.
