LOSS IN TRADE. . , By. Telegraph.— Association—Copyright. ■ • New York, May 20. The loss in exports of American canned beef for the present fiscal year owing to the Chicago scandals amounts to £1,000,000.

The disclosures as to the dreadful state of the packing houses at Chicago was mad© in May of last year by the publication of "The Jungle." In the, following seven months the exports of canned meat from Chicago alone had fallen by 15,000,0001b. The scandals affected the whole of the American trade in canned meat. Immense improvements have been since effected, and recently the British War Office reported that favourable reports had been received from officers sent to* inspect the packing houses. A system of inspection costing £600,000 a year is now in force in the industry.
