THE MONO RAIL.
MR. BRENNAN'S INVENTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received May 21, 10.17 p.m.) . ■r * -.r /";;'. ■ - : :/;',,: London, May 21. After leading engineers of India had reported favourably on Brennan's new type of mono-railway, the Indian Council has voted him £5000 to continue his experiments. The Indian Government is willing to construct 20 miles of line on the new system directly Mr.. Brennan is, ready. The War Office already has voted him £2000, besides giving him the use of the Brennan torpedo factory and all stores required for his gyroscope experiments. The system has been • patented throughout the world.
Mr. Brennan is a Melbourne man, but has been resident in England as a member of the Admiralty staff for ,15 or 16 years. Ho invented the Brennan torpedo, which is fired and guided from land, and has been used for harbour defence. Since the development of the submarine boat, however, the steerable torpedo is not so valuable a weapon as it was, and a year ago it was reported that the factory where it was made had been closed. It was reported at the time he took his invention Home that he had received £120,000 from the Admiralty for it and a permanent appointment. His mono-rail system was exhibited to the Premiers in' London recently. The gyroscope is an arrangement for maintaining the equilibrium of : the car as it runs on the single rail.
