Mr. Carruthers, speaking at the opening of the Litbgow ironworks yesterday, ' aggressively warned ; the Federal Government that it must not attempt a coddling system in establishing industries in any other State at
the expense of New South' Wales, which had embarked in a great iron and steel in- : dustry without any assistance from the . Federal Government. The taxpayers of the « "', St ate" would not tolerate being taxed to es- '';§? tablish industries in other States.
'"A contract was entered into by the State Government in September, 1805, with . . a Mr. Sandford. Under it the Government -' is to take all its pig iron for railways and other works from the Lithgow Company for a '-period''of seven years, the price to be * about 6 per cent, above, the prices ruling in the previous five years. The works will give employment directly and indirectly to several thousand men.
