MOUNT ALBERT FIRE BRIGADE ' _ ■ t ' SPORTS. ; / - A number " of residents of' the Mount Albert district and others desiring to encourage the men of the fire brigade in their efforts to perfect themselves in their work, presented , a number of prizes for competition. On Saturday afternoon an,interesting programme- of events incidental to fire fighting was. gone through, in the presence of interested spectators. Mr. F. Ellisdon, J.P., chairman of the Road Board, acted as starter, and Foreman Smithson, of the Grey Lynn brigade, was an efficient judge. The hockey season in Auckland was opened on Saturday afternoon, when about 600 persons journeyed to the polo ground, Remuera, to witness the sports and seven-a-side tournament which had been arranged by the Auckland-Hockey. Association to. mark the occasion. .Unfortunately, about one o'clock rain commenced to fall, and this, no doubt, was responsible for the absence of many persons who had notified' their intention of being present.'. A noticeable. feature 'was . the large attendance. of ladies, and they appeared --to bo keenly interested in the proceedings. A match was played between a - representative ladies' team, and a team from the gentlemen's asso-ciations-several members of the latter team wearing fancy dress] Victory rested with the men by the narrow margin,of one goal. A strong ladies' committee dispensed afternoon tea, which, owing to the cold breeze blowing across ' the ground, was much appreciated. During the course of the afternoon's proceedings Mr. B. J. M. Kemp (an honorary member of the association), in the absence of the president (Mr. W. Coleman), unfurled tho.handsomo flag presented to the association by Mr. H. Rees-George (a vicepresident \of the ,' association). *? Mr. Kemp, in a short speech, mado kindly reference to the - valuable ; . assistance Mr. R-ees-George has always given towards furthering the interests of hockey in Auckland. Three cheers were then called for Mr. ' George and the invitation was heartily responded to. Mr. Rees-George suitably replied, and in doing so expressed the hope that the flag might fly victorious in all matches • played by. ; Auckland's representatives. The sports aroused keen interest and some close finishes' were witnessed in the running events. The senior seven-a-svde tournament' resulted in,a win for the United Club after a hotly contested game with Auckland A.
