The late Bishop Hoare of Victoria, Hongkong, who lost his life in the recent terrible typhoon, was anxious even when lie was a- boy to become a missionary. He was scarcely eighteen when he told his father of his desire to work in the mis-sion-field abroad. His wish was ultimately granted, for in due course he was sent out to China.
Mr. Henry Fielding Dickens, Iv.C., son of the great novelist, is one of the many men who have failed to fulfil their literary promise. As a boy, scarcely ripe for an Eton jacket, he was the enthusiastic editor, printer, and publisher of a magazine called the Gad's Hill Gazette, in which all the domestic history of his family was recorded from week to week. With this experience his journalistic career began and ended.
Dr. Nansen, who is now the Norwegian Minister in London, says that at one time ho used not to smoke. During his Arctic expedition, however, a favourite amusement in the Flam was the sport of tossing darts at a target. One man on board had been presented with a large stock of cigarettes on leaving home, and a cigarette was always given for the btfst throw. Nansen himself proved the best shot, and before very long nearly all the cigarettes passed into his possession.
