MATCH WITH WANGANUJ.

VISITORS WIN* BY AN INNINGS AND

234 RUNS.

[BY. TELEGBiPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION'.]

WaKGaSCTi Saturday. The cricket match between the M.C.C. team and the Wanganui representative was concluded to-day, and resulted in a win for the Englishmen by an innings and 23+ runs. Wanganui continued their first inning*, and compiled 124 runs, Cave making 55 by careful and obanceless cricket. Most of the batsmen fell easy victims to the '" googlies" of Simpson-Hayward. who secured the good average of eight wickets for 43 runs. Following on the local team Mere all disposed of in their second innings for 95. the smallness of the score being chiefly owing to Douglas, who was practically unplayable, the express bowler corning out with the remarkable average of 10 wickets for 23 run*. '..-,-„ . . : Cave, tho not out man from Friday, and Arkwright started batting to Simpson-Hay-ward and Douglas, and the latter bowling the fast off-theory found Arkwright's wicket with his fifth delivery. Luxford and Cave scored two and three singles, and then the former was badly beaten by the slow bowler. Broad played four balls from Simpson-Hay-ward, and met the same fate. Cave then opened his shoulders, and sent the slow bowler to the boundary. The scoring up to this time had been very slow, only nine runs having been scored in half an hour. A. S. Wilder, who was playing both bowlers with great patience, eventually got Douglas away to the boundary, but then put him into Simpsbn-Hayward's bauds in the slips. Cave got. Douglas past point for three, Howard scored three singles and one to • Cave followed. Douglas then beat Cave „with one which kept 10w—87—9—55. Howard obtained a single, then got the express bowler through the slips for four and stole a single, bringing 90 up. Hitchings opened his account with a boundary off Torrens, and closed it. with the "next, a straight one from the same bowler. Joyce brought up the century by putting Torrens to leg for four. He then played across a. straight ono from Uorrens, and retired in favour of Brown. After several singles the batsman settled down to steady blocking. This brought Curwin on in place of Simpson-Hayward, and Bransion relieved Douglas, Flay became painfully slow, but just before the luncheon adjournment Simpson-Hayward went on again and bowled Howardlll—l2l4. After luncheon Jones ran up eight runs in four hits, and then got leg- lore- wicket to Simpson-Hayward. .Holland, the last man, scored two, and Brown was then caught by Branston off Simpson-Hayward,' tho innings closing for 124.

■ Howard and Brown opened tho second innings for Wanganui, and the former after scoring 11 runs in three hits was caught in the slips. Cave started well, but after making a similar score was well caught by Branston off Douglas. A. 15. Marshall joined Brown, and they played stubborn defensive cricket, but -when 13 runs had been obtained Brown was.caught,in tho slips off Dougias,. whoso second ball to Pearpoint proved fatal ——0. Alter making 13 runs by careful batting Marshall cut Douglas to Simp-son-Hay ward, who accepted. Turner was playing confidently when Douglas beat, him badly——6— Luxford and Broad batted steadily for 7 and 15 respectively, but the other batsmen could do nothing with the bowling of Douglas, who took the latt five wickets, and the innings closed for 95.
