CHARGE OF ASSAULT.

Palmers-ion North, Monday. At the Supreme Court this morning John Whelan came up for sentence on a charge of assaulting Patrick Ashe at Awahuri on August 5. The Chief Justice said he did not know what to -do with the prisoner. He would not grant probation, and could not impose a heavy sentence without depriving him of a chaiuce of obtaining his pension. After pointing out the seriousness of the offence, he said he would deal rather leniently with prisoner, and sentenced him to three months' hard labour.
