BOROUGH COUNCILS.

GREY LYNN.

The ordinary meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council was held last evening, Mr. A. Donald, Deputy-Mayor, presiding in the absence of Mr. Earrcll (Mayor) in Wellington. There were also present: Messrs. G. Savers, \V. W. Dumper, C. B. King, W. Dimery, W. S. Smith, ami W. Murray.

Great North Koad Subsidy: The town clerk reported Inning received a communication from the Mayor (Mr. Farrell) from Wellington: intimating that the Hon. (». Fowlds had advised him that it was practically certain that the balance of £500 for the work of deviating the Great- North Road would be made available shortly. Received. A letter from Mr. Geo. Baildon complained of the state of the Great. North Road and footpath, and more particularly in the vicinity of the tram stopping places- Mr. Dumper said that there was every reason for complaint, and thought that the contractor (Mr. Moody) or the City Council should bo called upon to forthwith put the road and paths in as good order as they had been. Messrs. King and Saycrs held that it would be a hardship if the contractor was called upon to do the work now and then be compelled to do it again when the new earth being put down consolidated. After further discussion it was decided to write to the Auckland City Council asking that the footpath bo put in order at once. Straying Cattle: Mi'. E. Williams, of Crumruer Road, wrote complaining of the damage done in the locality by straying cattle, and asking that stops be taken to have the nuisance abated. The DeputyMayor said that the present poundkeeper attended to the portion of the district in which ho resided, but not to the portion complained of. He thought a man should bo appointed who would receive a salary and look after the whole district. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee for consideration and report. New Zealand Exhibition : Mr. W. R. Holmes, secretary of the Auckland Provincial Committee in connection with the New Zealand International Exhibition, wrote renewing the request for a contribution from the Council towards the Auckland provincial court at the Exhibition. He pointed out that £850 16s had been raised, and that £1000 was required to ensure, the success of the undertaking. Mr. Dumper .thought that in view of the state of the borough's finances and the fact that the ratepayers were to bo approached with a view to a loan the Council should not contribute. Mr. Sayers moved that the question of contributing he deferred till next meeting, and was supported by Messrs. Smith and King. All three held that the Exhibition was of such importance that it was the duty of the Council to contribute. Mr. Saycrs wanted the question to be held over owing to the absence of the Mayor, who he knew was interested in such matters. This course was agreed to on the voices.

Finance: Accounts amounting to £179 16s 5d were passed for payment. • .; Tram Crossing: Mr. Murray asked that the foreman of works bo empowered to provide a permanent crossing at the tram terminus at Richmond. It was decided to provide the crossing. ; PARNELL. =■■'* J The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council, which was to have been held last night, lapsed from lack of a quorum. The Mayor (Mr. G. W. Basley) and Messrs. Wood, Briggs, Fowler, and Mitchell were the only members present. Current accounts amounting to £166 were passed for payment. The Mayor said that the engineer for the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr. Hamer) had offered the Council 1000 cubic yards of harbour material drawn up by the suction dredge at 6d per yard for the purpose of top-dressing King's Drive. The Mayor suggested that the Council should obtain 1500 yds, as Mr. Hamer considers that it will only take about 700 yds to do the work, and the remaining material could be used for top-dressing other roads. NEWMARKET. An ordinary meeting of the Nowmarkot Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. F. Bennett, presided, and there were also present: Messrs. MeC-01l (2), C. Leek, H. Kinder, R. Holmes, C. La Roche, and W. Edgerley. Tramway Matters: A letter was .received from Mr. P. M. Hansen asking the Council to reconsider its decision to allow Remuera cars only to stop at the newly-erected shelter shed at Newmarket, and to grant permission for all cars to stop there. The letter was received. Dr. I'rengley. district health officer, reported a case of scarlet fever in Alma-street, Newmarket. It was decided to contribute £5 towards the cost of an Auckland court at the forthcoming International Exhibition. _ ' . Correspondence was received intimating that at a conference of local authorities held on August 28 it was resolved that the Auckland City Council should pay £300, the sum for which the Government were willing to erect a one-span railway bridge at Mechanics' Bay, Parnell, and asking the Newmarket Council for its share, £30. The matter was referred to the Legal and Finance 1 Committee. ....... Mr. H. H. Metcalfe reported having made an examination of the railway gully, and gave an estimated cost of improving the existing sewage system there. It was degcided to call for tenders immediately. A letter was received from Mr. A. J. Sec-' combo tendering his resignation as chairman of the Streets "Committee owing to insufficient time at his disposal. It was unanimously resolved to ask Mr. Seeeombo to reconsider his decision. Several councillors eulogised his services as chairman of the Streets Committee, and remarked the great deal of time ho gave to the borough.

'* ONEHUNGA. • - ? The fortnightly meeting of the Onehiinga Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr. John Howe), and Messrs. Moody, Barr, Williams, Colledge, Osborne, Skinner, Hutchinson, and Morton.

Accounts: The town clerk reported! that the overdraft stood at £576 17s sd, and the. cemetery account was £140 13s lid in credit. Slaughtering: The Mayor said that it was intended to compel all. local butchers to slaughter in the abattoirs as soon as. they were completed. This was 1 agreed to.

Correspondence : A communication was received from the Council's solicitors stating that there was no legal objection to the Council taking over control of Harbour View Road, as the public had been using the road for a long time. It was decided to take over the road. A letter was received from the Campbell-Eh Company, Ltd., asking for a rebate on the water rate of the Victoria Hotel, in view of the fact that the license had been cancelled. Referred to the Council in committee. A letter was read from Mr. W. R. Holmes asking for a subscription towards the cost of the Auckland provincial court at the Christchurch Exhibition. It was agreed to donate £5. A letter was received from Mr. R. D. Stewart asking that a footpath be formed down Pleas-ant-street. it was agreed that the matter stand over. Mr. Kirkbride wrote acknowledging receipt of the petition re Onehunga Wharf, and stating that he intended to get several of tho Auckland members to give evidence before the committee in support of the petition. A letter was received from the trustees of Cornwall Park re site for new reservoir, and suggesting conditions; to' be inserted in the lease. The matter was referred to Council in committee. The clerk of the Mount Roskill Road Board wrote asking for a construction of £20 towards repairing White Swan Road. Referred to Council in committee. A letter was received from the secretary of the Seddon memorial fund asking for subscriptions towards the fund. The Mayor said that the Council had already contributed £20 towards the, fund. The Council had no recommendation to make in the matter.

Waterworks: A report was read from Mr. H. 11. Metcalfe stating that lie had inspected the old boiler at the pumping station, and found that the brickwork had spread at the back, and that the boiler had sunk. It, would be necessary ''to take out the old bricks and put in moulded bricks. The estimated cost would be £25. It was decided to call for tenders for the work. The turncock reported that 1.472,000 gallons of water had been pumped during tho last fortnight.

Scarlet Fever: Dr. Frengley wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the largo increase in scarlet fever cases at the Onehunga school. He asked the asssitancc of the Council in discovering eases of fever as soon as possible in order to prevent tho spread of the disease. It was agreed that Inspector Cutts give any assistance in his power iii the matter. Endowments: It was agreed that the Borough Council's endowments Ik* cut up and leased for residential purposes for a term of 66 years. • Shipping: The Mayor moved thai; the report of tho committee rescinding the 20 per cent, reduction for water supplied to shipping bo. adopted. Agreed to. Driving Cattle: A letter was received from the cleric of the Mangere Road Board requesting an alternative route for driving cattle through the borough and suggested that the route be. down Princes-street, up Albert-street, Grey-street, and Cardvvollstreet, and on to the Mount Smart Road. The Council agreed to grant the request.
