CHESS MATCH.

AUCKLAND V. PONSONBY.

A CHESS match took place on Saturday evening, between 17 representatives of the Auckland and Ponsonby clubs, at the room of tho Auckland Chess Club, Bis Majesty's Arcade. It terminated in a sweeping victory for the Auckland players by 13i to 3J, but when a return match is played, there is no doubt the Ponsonby men will acquit themselves much better. As it was, at several of the boards on Saturday, they secured the advantage in the early part of tho game, but. not having the experience of the town club veterans, were very weak in the endings. One notable victory tor the Ponsonby team was secured against a leading Auckland player. The latter had two rooks against his opponent's queen, and an equal number of pawns. Whilst in tho act of taking a pawn with a rook, tho Aucklander observed, when too late, that he was mated on the move by the capture of the other rook. It was an unusual error to occur at a top board However, the pawn was replaced and the game played out, still enuing in favour of the Ponsonby representative.
