St. Petersburg, July 20. The town of Syzran, in Russia, is on fire. - v
Several hundreds of people have perished in the flames.
The whole of the town is affected, and 36,000 people have lost their homes. ,
The ..'.;statement '■'.. that 36,000 people are homeless indicates that not a dwelling in the town hi* escaped. In the census of 1897 the population v.-as given as 53,046, and in 1391 it was given at 32.800. The town is on the right bank of the Volga, on the highway to Saratov. Its industries include tanneries, flour mills, shoe and hamessmaking, and hardware manufacture for export, while there is a considerable export of corn.
