'■Tins"'warships will go out into the gulf on Monday next for further gun practice, and to complete the annual prize-firing competition. A large number of the men were on shore on holiday leave yesterday. The preliminaries for the .forthcoming citizens' ball to the Admiral and officers of the squadron, are proceeding satisfactorily. The. invitations have been issued and subscribers' tickets arc- b?ing issued freely. Mr. W. R. Holmes, hon. sec., has been advised by' Mr. W. -Goldie, superintendent of parks, that a selection of magnificent decorative material has been gathered from the bush at Ahuroa. Considerable interest is being taken in the ball, which is expected to l:o a great success from every point of view. . The men of the fleet are to be entertained by the temperance societies of Auckland next Wednesday, in the Federal Hall. His Excellency the Admiral lias kindly promised leave to as many men as can be spared and desire to attend, and a good local committee is making every effort to make it a successful function.
