THE WOOL SALES.

MEDIUM WOOLS LOWER. INFERIOR WOOL FIRM. The second wool sale of the season, under the auspices of the Auckland Woolbrokers' Association, was held in the Chamber of Commerce yesterday morning. The principal buyers present were: Messrs. 1. O. Price and J. Murgatroyd representing Southern houses and buyers for the English firms, Mr. Burns representing the Onehunga Woollen Mills, Mr. A. Donald and Mr. C. Hesketh. There was only a fair attendance of growers. The sale was opened by Messrs. (4. W. Binney and Sons (Mr. L. B. Kings-well, auctioneer), with 493 bales, Messrs. Alfred Buckland and Sous (Mr. C. G. Brookes selling) followed with 1055 ba,les. then the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Mr. H. 0. Nolan, auctioneer), with 1800 bales, and then the Auckland Farmers' Union (Mr. C. Newman, auctioneer), with 478 bales, making a total of 3816 bales, as against 2774 for the corresponding sale of last year, and 3128 for the first sale this season, which was an advance of 702 over the first sale of last season.

The wool, generally speaking, was nob equal in quality to that offered at the first sale; a good deal of it came from the back country, and a number of lines were marked " logstained," while the major portion was more greasy than tliat sold in November. Some of it was also affected by seeds, such as of the " biddy biddy." The finer sorts were not in. such prominence yesterday, and the medium classes were coarser in texture. The sales opened with 1 downward tendency, and bidding was '. ery rarely brisk, closing with generally decreased prices, except in the case of bellies, locks, and pieces, and inferior wools generally, for which there was good demand, and even an advance in prices. Medium wools, on the whole, may be said to have declined $d to Id per lb. Finer wools averaged Id to £d per lb lower than at the November sale, but bellies and pieces advanced from jd to Id per lb for the better sorts. A very large proportion of the lots catalogued were passed in at the buyers' reserve, and while a number of these were subsequently disposed of privately, it is safe to say growers are holding on for better prices, and one or two of the firms are likely to consign a good deal Home if advanced quotations are not forthcoming. In only one or two cases the bids reached the shilling, and these were passed in. Various reasons have been advanced for the disparity between buyers' and sellers' valuations; some think the buyers are holding off for the London and Dunedin quotations, and others state that growers were led to expect higher prices by the results of the November sale, while others state that the oilers were a fair enough valuation, and that the drop was only through the wool offered being of an all-round inferior quality, and more greasy than at the first sale, and faulty packing is also responsible in some measure. A Herald representative visiting the wool stores was shown a number of instances where attention had not been shown to the getting up of the wool. Skirting and everything else had been thrown in, dark wools mixed with light, pieces which should have been classed as locks were mixed with the fleeces, and dirty wool was rammed in with the clean. In the case of several lots no discretion whatever seemed to have been exercised ; bales opened haphazard disclosed seedy and logstained wools mixed with clean fleeces, no attempt at skirting had been made, some fleeces had not even been daggeel properly, and some first-class wool, which should have otherwise brought high prices had baled up with it locks and pieces and some very inferior wool. Indications were not wanting that the farmers are not endeavouring to keep an even class of flock, and the greatest possible .difference was noticed in the outputs of individual sheds. While this is so, the natural result must be a valuation by . the buyers as " mixed wool,'' and really good lines go down in prices. There was some evidence of better classing and grading, and in these cases, prices generally were a good deal better than in the faultily packed lots.

Messrs. G. W. Binney and Sons, offering 493 bales, passed in over half the lots catalogued. Fine crossbreds were from fd to Id lower than at last sales, and mediums £d to |d lower, while inferior wools were firm. Locks and pieces advanced from id to Id per lb on the November sales. The firm has expressed its intention of holding to its valuations, and of consigning to the English market where reasonable prices are not forthcoming for the better wools.

Messrs. A. Bucklaud and Sons submitted 1055 bales, and found the demand for medium wools less than in November, and about the same as at the second sale last year. Very inferior wools were about the same as at last sales, while bellies and pieces advanced Id per lb. The selection of the wool had not been so good, and not such good quality was forward, while there was also more " seedy" and " logstained" wool offered. Fine wools declined to £d, but some of it was not quite as good as at the first sales.

The New Zealand Loan and .Mercantile Agency Company catalogued 1800 bales, and disposed of a very large proportion of the lots. The wool was not quite up to the early sales standard, and a. lot of it was affected by seeds, and a good deal was of the coarser soils. The firm found a drop of from £d to |d per lb in the coarser wools, and also in the " logstained" and " seedy" varieties. Locks and pieces, etc., however, were firm. The Fanners' Union opened their second sale with 478 bales, the great majority of which were of fleeces, locks and pieces, bellies and crutchings, etc., for the most part being disposed of privately prior to the sale. They found the wool generally in pretty fail' order, but some of it was spoiled through faulty packing. A satisfactory percentage of the lots offered was disposed of, and a number of the lots, passed in at reserve, were subsequently cleared at satisfactory quotations. Following are details of the.sales: —
