SACHALIEN OPERATIONS.

FURTHER JAPANESE SUCCESSES. Sydney, July 29. The Japanese Consul has received advices from Tokio stating that the squadron under Admiral Kataoka landed an army on July 24 near Alcova, in Saghalien. The Russians burned Numina and tried to fire the wharf at Alexandrovsk, but were driven off.

• The Japanese army advanced and the enemy fled.

The Japanese then successively occupied Alcova, Mugate, Alexandrovsk, and Dore. The Russians offered little resistance.

CAPTURE OF THE ISLAND ALMOST COMPLETE.

OPERATIONS ON THE MAIN-

LAND. (Eeceived July 30, 4.32 p.m.) London, July 29. The Russian troops that were driven recently from Alexandrovsk, in Saghalien, are expected to surrender shortly. They are now isolated 30 miles to the south-east, of Alexandrovsk. When they have surrendered the capture of Saghalien will be complete. Rear Admiral Kataoka reports that after the capture of lighthouses at Alexandrovsk, in Siberia, he bombarded the town and silenced four of the enemy's guns. The Russians then retreated from Siberian Alexandrovsk after setting fire to the place and blowing up the magazine. It will be observed that the above cablegram refers to operations at two places called Alexandrovsk on the mainland, and the other in Saghalien 1 . A cablegram last week described the capture of Alexandrovsk on the mainland, when really it was Alexandrovsk in the island that had! fallen. RUSSIAN RAIDING CRUISERS BRITISH STEAMER SEARCHED. London, July 28. The Russian auxiliary cruiser Kuban has stopped and seached the British steamer Fazilka in the Red Sea. The vessel was then allowed to proceed. This is one of the cruisers that recently received instructions from the Russian Admiralty through British cruisers to cease raiding merchant vessels. GERMAN STEAMER SEIZED. London, July 28. Japanese cruisers have seized the German steamer Hyde near the Loochoo Islands (between Formosa and Japan), on the charge of carrying contraband.
