The wicket was in good order. There was a ' fair attendance. Changes were made in the county team, Stedman, Rushby, and Smith being selected in place of Raphael Lees, Strudwick, and Baker. ' . ' Layer, Hopkins, Newland, and Gregory are not playing for the colonials. Darling won the toss. • Trumper and Armstrong opened the innings, and the former was dismissed when the board showed 15. Armstrong was joined by Hill, and while the newcomer hit out freely, the Victorian played cautiously. Eventually he played Rushby on. Two for 47. (Hill 25.) Noble, like Armstrong, played the ball on to his wicket. Three for 63. • : Duff and Hill then made a good stand, and the fourth wicket did not go down until 122 had appeared on the sheet. Hayes then beat Duff. ; Darling followed, and. Hill carried his score to 89,. when Smith got him leg-before.
