WHANGAREI ITEMS.
[BY TELEGRAM. — CORRESPONDENT.] "Whangabei, Tuesday. A special meeting of the fire brigade was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. H. Weaver), who occupied the chair, said that, with Mr. Robert?, he formed part of the deputation appointed to see what provision could be made for the accommodation' of two I men to sleep at the station. He would be ! pleased to receive any suggestions made by the meeting- and to report these to the Council. The superintendent complained I of the general indifference to the firo brigade. There were several things in which they were lacking. The members felt that they were not properly provisioned in the way of uniforms and boots. The brigades in all other places were allowed £1 per man per annum as boot money, and he thought that the men here were entitled to the same consideration. A messenger was needed to attend to the hose and other matters when a lire was in progress. The Mayor said that ho would report the requests and suggestions of the meeting to the Borough Council. He certainly considered that the brigade should bo socially recognised, and he thought it was of vast importance that proper telephone communication should be established at night. All essential repairs would, of course, be attended to. If the Eire Brigades Bill passed, as he trusted it would, the whole matter would be placed on a better basis. A successful operation for the removal of the right eye was performed at the hospital yesterday on the Maori, Hakanhi Hiki, whoso case has already been reported. Despite the long interval between the time of the accident and his_arrival at the hospital, I the patient is progressing favourably.
