LAUNCH OF AN AIRSHIP.
SUCCESFUL TRIAL TRIP. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. London, July 24. Dr. Barton's airship made a successful flight from Alexandra Park yesterday.
There were four persons on board the airship, and they had perfect control.
• The ship ascended to a great height, was steered in various directions, and turned 011 a 200 yds curve.
* ■It descended in Essex, and its occupants landed safely, but then in handling it its equilibrium was thoughtlessly upset, and it sustained considerable damage. .
Dr. Barton has spent nearly throe years on tho building of his airship. It includes a balloon containing I¥o,ooo cubio feet of gas with a lifting capacity of 11,9001b, and a smaller balloon below containing 12,000 cubic feet, which acts as a kind of governor, regulating tho tension on the bigger balloon. . The crew sit on a bamboo framework or _ 'dock, and between the dock, and the main balloon are 30 aeroplanes for balancing purposes. The propelling power is provided by two 47-h.p. engines, which drive two sets of six-bladed propellers at the sides of the deck. The propellers, which are like fans, turn at 100 revolutions a minute. - The rudder consists of a sail 17ft by 12ft.
