Brisbane, May 8. ' The Premier of New South Wales (Mr. Garrut-hera), interviewed regarding ; his visit to Queensland, said there is much feeling in some of the sugar centres against the proposed deportation of kanakas. Many of the kanakas have married'and have families, and live on their own land. : To deport them amongst savage islanders-' was, in his opinion, a blot on our civilisation. The story that kanakas were'outting, down wages was absurd. They were! getting the ruling rates, and a recent attempt to reduce wages had led to a strike. Strange to say the places of the kauak* strikers were tilled by whites.
