A large Heel of yachts were away cruising down the Gulf on Saturday and Sunday last. The weather on Saturday was perfect, but it set in thick and rainy on Sunday, and the yachtsmen v. ho were afloat had anything but a plea-ant time of it on the return trip. Matter- in utpuitio circles are al present, very quiet and during the next few weeks a large number of the yacht-: will go out of commission for the season. An important committee meeting of the West End Rowing Club will be held on Monday evening next, when matters in connection with the club's annual prize night and social, to be- held on Friday night, June 16. will be discussed.'

Tin; ■-team launch, recently built by Mr. C. Bailey, juu., for the Messrs. Seagar Bros., went for a trial trip yesterday, and acquitted herself very creditably. The launch left for the Thames last night with a party of the friends of the owner- on a shooting expedition. Messrs. Logaiv Bros, have made a start on the. fast cruising yacht for Mr.' A. T. Pit tar. The yacht will be sent across to Sydney in time "for the opening of the next yachting season.

The Auckland Scenery Conservation Society lias approached the Royal New Zealand Yacht. Squadron regarding the destruction of pohiiliikawus and other vegetiition along the coast, and asking for tin* squadron's co-operation in the Matter. A reply has been front" to the society by Hie scptadror vnomisiug to bring the matter before the ~members-. J trust that our yachtsmen will use every endeavour to prevent the wanton destruction of the native trees and bush along the, coast. The Tom Sullivan-Eddie Dtirnan race will be rowed at Toronto about August 23. The amount at stake will probably lw a purse of £200 and £10C a-side, Sullivan getting £50 for expenses. Aquatic folk will regret, to hear of the death of Charles Amos -Messenger, of Double Hay, Sydney, which look place on Good Friday. The name of Messengei i- wellknown on the Thame.-, his father, .lame?, having been a • hainpion in 1857, and for many years Queen's waterman in charge of the State, barge. Charlie rowed in several races in New Zealand, Victoria, and New South Wales, and was associated with many of the leading .-cullers as trainer and otherwise. For several years he resided at. Double Bay, where, with his brother Harry, he built many rowing and sailing boats, and had an extensive letting-out connection. He was in his 52nd year, and leaves a wife and family, including Charlie, juu., who has won Mulling races. AUCKLAND ROWING CLUB.
