HOUSE BURNED AT WAINGARO.
Tuf. first fire that has occurred in Waingaro originated at Mr. Smith's residence at about one o'clock on Thursday .morning (writes our correspondent). It appears that. Mrs. Smith was awakened by the crackling sound, and after ascertaining the cause, placed her children in a position of safety, and roused the married couple sleeping in an adjoining room. The occupants were fortunate in escaping, for the tire had already got a good hold, and although attempts were made to save property, practically everything was lost. Unfortunately Mr. Smith was in Auckland at the time. Mr. Meßetli, the only man present, cut his foot badlv in his endeavour to save property, and is still unable to get about. The origin of the (ire is unknown. The occupants retired at half-past eight p.m.. and everything appeared safe, the tire in the kitchen stove j being out : but when discovered the fire j had a good hold of the. partition between - the kitchen and the diningroom. The house and furniture were insured, but Nix - . Smith • will lie a heavy loser. j —— I
