AN AUSTRALIAN SLAVE.
IN BONDAGE AT SATOW.
Perth, December 2. Some time ago the Bishop of Perth, Dr. Riley, received a letter from the Bishop of Victoria, sent from St. Paul's College. Hongkong, requesting that inquiries be made concerning the parentage of a boy named Jim Booth, who was horn nt Perth, and had been held in slavery for some time by a Chinese family residing; at Satow. In his letter the Bishop of Victoria states: —"The boy has just been rescued from the mainland of China inland from Satow Bay. The boy was bom at Perth, and, according to information from the Consul at Satow, both his father and mother were Australians, Booth being the name of tho mother, who died some years ago, since when the boy has been held in bondage by a Chinese family at Satow." Upon the receipt of this letter Bishop Riley communicated with the Criminal Investigation Department, where inquiries have elicited the following facts: — "The hoy is an illegitimate son of a woman who came to this State from Adelaide some years ago She lived for some time with a Chinese in a Perth suburb, and left this State five or six years ago in company with a Chinese." The detectives' inquiries have elicited the further fact that during the past few years several other white women, with children, accompanied by Chinese, have left West Australia for China.
