THE TSAR'S GRATITUDE,
REWARDS FOR THE TALBOT'S
OFFICERS AND MEN.
London, December 11.
The Tsar has presented a silver bowl and ladle to the wardroom officers of the British cruiser Talbot, in recognition of the assistance they rendered to the crews of the gunboats Varyag and Coreetz when they were sunk by the Japanese at Chemulpho at the opening of the war. He has also given £500 to the Royal naval fund.
The cruiser Talbot was lying at Chemulpho when the Varyag and Coreetz were attacked by Rear-Admiral Uriu and sunk. The Talbot's boats rescued 600 of the Russians, and they were landed at Hongkong and paroled. They received assistance from the British sailors, who sot aside part of their pay to provide thorn with comforts on their homeward journey.
