SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT.
Lv reply to a telegram sent to the Premier on Friday, expressing the hope that, even in the event of districts being gazetted, steps would not be taken against small shopholders as regards the hours of closing, Mr. George Tint, chairman of the meeting recently held by shopkeepers of the Upper Symonds-streefc and adjacent districts, has received the following from Mr. Seddoii: — "Your telegram received. .Subject matter thereof now under consideration of Ministers. Gazetting of combined districts does not alter position, and'it is Government's intention to proceed with test case."
In regard to the protest made by persons engaged in the confectionery trade in Auckland, the Premier has forwarded a reply to the secretary to the employees, stating that the protest had been duly noted, and had been .sent on to the Labour Department, as customary.
For eight cadet-ships in the navy, provided annually for Australians under the new naval smeement, only three boys have been nominated this year, one each from Queensland, Tasmania, and West Australia. These three will be tested by the public service examination as to their educational qualifications. If successful, they will leave for England in January next, and will have four years' course of study ill the Ivoyal Naval Training College, and will then be drafted into service.
