DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting "of - the Devonport Borough Council, held last evening, was at- 1 tended by,. the .Mayor-.(Mr. E. W. Alison, M.H.R.), and ' Messrs. R. Logan, •W. Hand-'-ley, J. A. Walker, J. B. Graham, G. Edgcumhe, C. C. Dacre, and C. 'P.' ; Murdoch. •: Noxious Weeds Inspector: Notification was received of the appointment of Mr. C. Savage as inspectorof' noxious'' weeds for r the borough. ~ -.. c
Jubilee Avenue: Mr, A, R. Watson wrote complaining of the unsatisfactory state' of Jubilee Avenue, and the Council directed that repairs be effected as soon as possible. i f The Sand and Shell on the Beaches: -The secretary of the Auckland Harbour. Board wrote stating that when the question of the removal of .sand and shells from the beaches was under consideration at the Board's; last meeting the following report from" the Works and Tariff Committee was adopted:— ""That the Board provide the necessary-ma-terial for fence at Narrow Neck, upon the undertaking of the Devonport Borough Council to erect the same." The Council' decided to provide the labour as suggested. _ • Building Permits: Five . building ■ permits were granted. ■ , '■. ■ The Borough's Churches: The building and sanitary inspectors reported that, in consequence of instructions, they had inspected all the places of public worship within the borough. They considered all the buildings safe and satisfactory, as far as fire escapes and sanitation were concerned, with but one exceptiontho Church of England Sundayschool. Before a license should be granted to the ■ latter, connection with the sewer ought to be completed. > v The cantain of the five brigade, in reporting upon the question of fire escapes in the different buildings, said that the double folding-doors at the front of the Anglican Church, should always be unbolted and unlocked, and kept clear from obstruction when holding services. One fireescape door should also be mad© north of the side near the pulpit, and all the doors should be made to open outwards. All that was required in the Anglican 'Sunday-school, the Wesleyan Church, and Sunday-school, and the Congregational Church, was that the doors should be made to open outwards instead of inwards as at present. In regard to the Foresters' Hall, tho two side doors re-quired-altering, so that the passage-way might be made clear. The fire hose should always be kept in readiness to fix on tap to reach any part of the' hall, while the room upstairs ought to be provided with a firecscapo door, and iron ladder to tho main street and staircase to the main front entrance. • The reports were referred to the Streets and Works Committee for report. The Committees: The following committees were elected for the ensuing year:— Streets and Works, the Mayor, and Messrs. Hafl*Jley, Logan, Edgeumbe, Murdoch, and Walker; Finance and Legal, the Mayor, and Messrs. Dacre, Mason, and Philson; Waterworks, tho Mayor, and Messrs. Handley, Walker, Logan, Murdoch, : and Philson; Cemetery, the Mayor, and Messrs. Walker and Graham; Readingroom, Messrs. Walker, Mason, and Philson,
Notice of Motion:. In accordance with notice of motion, Mr. Handley moved, "That the Government be requested to make another valuation at once." ' On the suggestion of- the Mayor, the mover consented to withdraw the motion, and move it again at the next meeting of the Council, so that .the rating on. unimproved values question might come up for discussion at the same time.
