M asset, M.H.R., leader of the Opposition, addressed a largely-attended meeting ati Marton last- evening. Replying to the Premier's contradiction of his statement in regard to having to go to foreign money-lenders for money for the purchase of estates for closer settlement, Mr. Massey said he believed he was right in asserting that seven-eighths of the public debt of the colony was owned by people outside the colony. The Premier bid said that the money required for the prophase of land had been borrowed locally; if so, it had been borrowed during the last two or three years, on short-dated debentures, simply because it was not possible to borrow the money in England | but interest wW made payable in three places— the colony, Australia, and England. Some day, when • opportunity offered to borrow at Home, tha Treasurer would raise a large conversion loan and pay off these short-dated debentures. Mr. Mjissey had a most enthusiastic reception, and was continually applauded. > - ■ ' -
