CBeeeivcd December 29, 11.57 p.m.) London, December 29. Mr. R. B. Haldane, member for Haddingtonshire, speaking in Edinburgh, declared that if Mr. Chamberlain succeeded he would not give 20 years' purchase for the Empire's life. (Received December 29, 11.5 p.m.) London, December 29. Replying to a correspondent who complained of the disadvantages British life insurance companies experienced in the colonies compared with the colonial companies in Britain. Mr. Chamberlain stated that such a question should be properly discussed when- the negotiations began with the colonies relative to the mutual preferential treatment. London, December 29. The Westminster Gazette says that while Canada and Australia do not reduce their tariffs sufficiently to enable British goods to enter their markets on terms of greater equality than at present,' they do not conform to Mr. Chamberlain's declaration at the last Colonial Conference. The Gazette insists that the colonial Agents-General ought to keep free from the fiscal controversy.
