HON. W. HALL-JONES.
MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY ROUTE
INSPECTED. [iIT. TELEGKAI'H. —OWN COIUIESPQNDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. W. Hall-Jones) and party arrived at Raetihi yesterday. The correspondent of the Post, states that they rode over the Main Trunk route from Piriaka, the journey occupying two days. The principal place inspected en route was the Makatote Valley, a narrow, deep, picturesque gorge, over which must be constructed the biggest viaduct on the line, 864 ft long, and 257 ft high. Formation work is in hand up to seven miles south of Piriaka, and bushmen are clearing the route through the Wainuuino forest, a point several miles beyond the formation works. There is, roughly, a gap of 60 miles between the northern and southern extremities of the woik, including at least 30 bridges and four large viaducts, besides that of Makatote! One of those on the Taihape side of Saetihi is 970 ft long and 145 ft high. The Minister leaves for Taihape to-day.
