SUDDEN DEATH OF A VETSRAN.
A veteran of the WaLkato war, nimed John Fred. Ahrens, one ot the party who attended the laying of the foundation stone of the Veterans' Home yesterday, died very suddenly just after the ceremony Ahrens seemed in bis usual health while attending the ceremony, and, with a numbe of other veterans, got into a drag, at the ate of the home, and drove as far as the Ibyal Oak. He went into a store near the loyal Oak and had a bottle of ginger beer, and aftef drinking it complained of a nasty pain, and said his heart was affected. * >v"ith the others he got into a tramcar, invading to come to town, but before the car ttarted he fainted, and was carried to the sde of the road, where he expired. Ahrens. who was approaching 70 years of age, livec recently at Mount Albert, but was formerly well known as a sausage vendor in the dtv The coroner (Mr. Gresham) will hold an 'inquest at the Royal Oak Hotel at half-past ten this forenoon.
