THE choir members of St. Paul's held a very successful social gathering at the Criterion Theatre on Thursday night, the proceeds being devoted towards the purchase of books, etc. There was a large attendance, and the floor was in the pink of condition. _ Excellent music was provided by Misses Capill (piano), Pugu. (violin), and Mr. C. Mettam (cornet). A progressive euchre tournament was held, ami the ladies' prize (a handsome biscuit barrel presented by Mr. J. Hague -Smith) was won by Mrs. Bromwicli, and the gent.'s (silver match box given by Mr. Evans) by Mr. P. Flynn. The committee worked very hard to make the affair a success, and they must have lett gratified at the results achieved.

CAMBRIDGE. MB. JAS. McNETSH. a returned trooper, and an employee of Mr. F. J. Sanders, had tJ.e,misfortune, while lifting some bags of flour, to strain himself internally, necessitating his removal to the Waikato Hospital, where he has undergone an operation.

WH A N G AR EI. Messrs. MENZIES and GREY'S new aerated water manufactory was formally opened this (Saturday) morning. The lea-ding townspeople were invited to inspect the really up-to-date plant, which does Mr. Menziea great credit, he having suiierintended its erection. The Marsden Mounted Rifles struck camp and inarched to Whangarci, under Lieutenant McMillan. There has been a large number of settlers in Whangarei to-day.
