FIRING FOR THE GOVERNMENT MEDALS AT PAEROA. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeeoa, Saturday. he annual firing for the Government medals took place on the Paeroa range this afternoon under the control of LieutenantColonel Porritt. Sergeant Shaw, who succeeded in winning the silver medal last year, again put on top score among the local men to-day, Sergeant Kenny being second. The scores were as follows:—Sergeant Shaw, 32 at 300 yds, 35 at 500 yds, 36 at 700 yds, total 103; Sergeant Kenny, 21, 36 and 31, total 88; Private 11. Thompson, 31, 33 and 22, total 86; Corporal Hubbard, 29, 28 and 24, total 81; Private J. Hubbard, 23, 34 and 22, total 79; Private W. Moore, 13, 31 and 30, total 74; Sergeant Maingay (Piako Mounted Rifles), 30 and 33, total 63. The last-named competitor arrived after the 300,vds range had been finished, and proceeded on with the 500 yds and 700 yds. When he found that he would have to put oil the possible at the 300 yds in order to beat knaw's score he decided not to fire.
