LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
MANUFACTURING INTERESTS WANT REPRESENTATION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —rRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington-, Wednesday. The Industrial Association carried a resolution drawing the attention of the Government to the need of manufacturing interests being represented in the Legislative Council, and trusting that in further appointments due consideration will be given to the request. A deputation will wait on the Premier to place the matter before him.
Speaking at a meeting of the Industrial Association, on the question of Legislative Council appointments, Mr. J. P. Luke said the industries generally should be represented as effectively as labour was represented, and have a direct voice in the Legislature of the country. It was in hit, opinion high time that employers put themselves in the position of demanding the right to have fair and equitable representation in the Upper House, and a voice in decision on measures affecting industrial interests. Mr. W. Allan said the association had hitherto held a neutral position in labour matters, and contented itself with looking after the industries and manufactories of the colony. But this was a matter which affected a wide interest. _ Mr. D. Robertson also thought the suggestion a step in the right direction. Direct representation would benefit the master as well av. the man, and practical knowledge would often prove of good use in the making of our laws.
