KANGAROO AT LARGE.
EXCITING CHASE AND CAPTURE AT EUSTON STATION.
There was an exciting kangaroo hunt at Euston Station lately.
Half a dozen kangaroos had arrived in crates by train from Mr. Walter Rothschild's place at Tring, and were about to be placed on a van for transport to an 'animal-dealer's menagerie. Suddenly one of the number—a strong, young, brown animal, with an evident taste for explora—found a weak place in its crate and burst out. Its appearance on No. 6 platform led to a usually calm and judicious inspector to shout, "Why, here's a bear!" Regardless of the insult the animal bounded along the platform at top speed, followed by a small pack of porters and guards. An inspector in front rushed towards it, spread out his arms as if to stop it, and then, his courage suddenly giving way, slipped behind a door. At "a speed which au experienced guard described as " thirty miles an hour and running past all signals" the kangaroo rushed on until it was headed off by a little boy towards No. 1 platform, with at least a hundred persons at its heels.
A guard stood in the line of advance. For one thrilling moment he stood gazing at the bounding animal and the shouting multitude, and then dived adroitly under a standing carriage. Inspectors, guards, newsboys, porters, cabmen, passengers, ticket collectors, and errand lads all joined in the and at last the panting kangaroo was brought to earth by a cabman, who, regardless of all danger, threw his arms round the animal's neck and held fast, gaining the applause of the spectators for his courage. Then, without the slightest difficult v. the kangaroo was placed in a crate and carted away with his doubtlessly envious companions.
