PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. A. H. Nathan* was a passenger to New Plymouth by the Ngapuhi yesterday. Dr. Redman, of Blenheim, has been appointed surgeon to the Picton Hospital, vice Dr. Claridge, resigned. Colonel Davies, commandant of the local volunteer forces, arrived from Wellington by the Takapnna on Saturday. Or. T. B. Whitton, who has been medical officer to the Reefton Hospital for the past 17 years, has resigned that, position, he having purchased a practice in the North Island. Mr. Leo Northcroft, formerly editor of the West Coast Times at Hokitika, has been appointed to the charge of the Land Settlement Department in the High Commissioner's office at Johannesburg. Major Poison, D.5.0., who was captain in the Fifth Contingent, and held a command in the Eighth, was fare welled at Blenheim by a large crowd on the occasion of his departure for South Africa to settle down there. At the Nelson Council Chambers on Friday the Mayor presented Mr. W. G. Murray, Commissioner of Crown Lands, with a handsome presentation on behalf of the resident.? of Hokitika. The presentation consisted of an illuminated address, and tea and coffee service and gold brooches, for his wife and daughter. A very pleasing ceremony took place at the establishment of Mr. Geo. Court, Newton, on Thursday evening last, when Miss Peace, who has been connected with the firm for the last eight years, was the recipient of- a very handsome and useful present. Miss F. Taylor, who is also leaving. wis presented with a very handsome gift. On behalf of their fellow employees, Mr. C. Rainger made the present ion in a very appropriate speech.
