FIRE AT LIMESTONE ISLAND.

CEMENT COMPANY'S WORKS DESTROYED. -

A brief telegram received in town from the manager of the New Zealand Portland Cement Company's works at Limestone Island, Whangarei River, states that the works were destroyed by fire on Saturday night.

No particulars are given beyond the fact the the outbreak occurred during the prevalance of a gale, and that so rapid was the progress of the fire that in half-an-hour the work of destruction was complete, all efforts to suppress the conflagration proving unavailing.

The loss to the company is likely to prove a very serious one if the extent of the damage is as great as is feared from the nature of the meagre telegram.

The works were of an extensive character, covering nearly an acre of ground, and had only recently been fitted up with an entirely new plant, at a cost of £15,000.

The insurances, we are informed, amount to about £7000, in the Australian Alliance, which had protected itself by re-insurances.
