A FAMOUS CHURCH IN DANGER.
ITALY'S NEGLECT OK HER NATIONAL MUS CM KNTS. The disaster to the Campanile at Venice has produced a. certain amount of indignation throughout Italy with regard to the neglected state in which the priceless historical monuments of the nation are permitted to remain. It is now discovered that the roof of the Church of St. John Lateran, in Rome, threatens to fall in. St. John Lateran is one of the four "Basilicas" and the mother church of Rome, taking precedence even of St. Peter's. The church is in charge of the Franciscan older of monks, who are unable to raise the sum of £20.000 for its restoration. It is also reported that the Church offit. Francis of Assisi. at Assisi, is in a bad way, and is so dilapidated that the rain has come, through the roof and ruined some of the pictures. There are over 5000 historical monuments in Italy, and the whole amount at the disposal of the Minister for Public Instruction for their upkeep is £2000 a year.
