THE GOLDFIELDS.
AUCKLAND SHAREM ARRET. ; The . market was fairly active yesterday. In investment lines South British Insurances commanded a better price, sales being reported at 90s and 91s 3d. The Waihi Gold Mining Company have commenced crushing operations at the Union-Waihi battery. At present 10 stampers only are running, and the rest will be gradually got into commission. When the whole plant is engaged on ore the monthly returns will doubtless be favourably affected. PUKEWHAU G.M. CO. [BY TEIiEGEAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CoROMANDEL, Friday. The Pukewhau Gold Mining Company have completed a crushing of six tons of general ore and 81b of picked stone for a return of Boz 2dwt of incited bullion, valued at £23 19s Id. BUNKER'S HILL. [iiy TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Cokomandkl, Friday. Mr. J. Cbutts, mining inspector, has been in Coromandel for the past two days. When visiting the Bunker's Hill mine he suggested the carrying out of certain improvements, which are being given effect to. WAIHI SOUTH G.M. CO. OPERATIONS RESUMED. [IVY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Friday. At the beginning of the week the management of theWaihi South Gold Mining Company, by an arrangement with the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company, commenced operations from the 500 ft level in the former company's Waihi West shaft. From this point crosscutting will be vigorously prosecuted, and meanwhile the haulage will be done by the Grand Junction Company. The Waihi South Company will drive through the intervening ground in the Waihi West mine into their own ground at a merely nominal cost as compared to that which would be occasioned if they had to sink a shaft themselves to a similar depth, and to do their own pumping. The proposed crosscutting is not likely to increase the present influx of water, which is sufficient to tax the Waihi West pumping plant, unless one or more, of the Waihi Gold Mining Company's reefs be cut. For this very valuable concession on the part of the Waihi Grand Junction Company the Waihi South Company have nothing to pay, and, as far as I know, there are no arbitrary conditions imposed. Mr. Simmons, manager of the Grand Junction .Company,. states that the chances of picking up the Empire or Royal reefs, which are being worked by the Waihi Company, in the course of this drive at the 500 ft level are by no means remote. Apart from the immediate advantages to the Waihi South Company their experiment will be of value and of interest to other local companies similarly situated to themselves. Fourteen engineers and foundrymen from Messrs. Sea gar Bros., Auckland," and Price and Co., Thames, are at present engaged at the Union Waihi battery constructing boilers and vats. I understand that on the completion of this work they will be for some time similarly employed at the Waihi Company's head battery" in Waihi. SOUTHERN MINING. [B?
