THE BARQUE TIM ARU.
+. {BY XEI.KCRAWI. —PRESS ASSOCIATION I .] „ Christchurot, Friday. ", The barque Timaru, which is overdue at*; Kaipura, is owned by Messrs. Turnbull Co., Christchurch. She is commanded byj Captain Johnson, who has had 18 years' ex-{ perience in New Zealand waters. Besides.! ballast, she carried 20 tons of produce, mak-s ing 160 tons altogether. She is an excepts tionally stiff vessel, and the owners do not' think any accident has happened through.; the ballast shifting. She was seen on.*] August 21, when five days ant from Lyttel-x ton, by the Elverland and the Mornings Light, about 35 miles south-east of Cape* Campbell. A north-west gale sprang up oirj the 24th, and the Timaru was again seen by! the Morning Light about 10 miles east ofl Kaikoura, Peninsula. The wind from Fri-* day till Sunday had been exceptionally,! heavy, with high sea, and the Timaru had£j apparently rode out the gale all right. Afe southerly breeze then sprang up, with thick), weather, and the two vessels ran before ituj the Timaru being lost sight of. The Morn- ■ ing Light, bound for Waitapu, was off Cape Campbell at midnight, when the wind was light and the weather clear. There has not been rough weather since, and as the Timaru came through the heavy gale without mishap" there appears to be no reason to suppose that the shifting of ballast has been the* cause of the vessel's non-arrival. The Elverland, which was in company with the' Timaru and Morning Light off Cape Campbell on the. 21st, anchored in Cloudy Bay. and arrived at Kaipara on the 27th ult.
