AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland College and Grammar School Board of Governors was held in the office of the Board, Victoria Arcade, yesterday. Professor Brown presided, and there were also present: Professor Thomas, the Hon. J. A. Tole, Mr. R. Farrell, and Dr. Roberton. Finance: The monthly statement of accounts showed a debit balance of £"455 7s 4-d. Accounts totalling £664- 8s were passed for payment. , Hobson-street Leases: The Property Committee recommended that the Board accept the surrender of leases of lots rented by Messrs. J. G. Rutherford, R. Cameron, J. Owen, T. F. Lees, and Edwin Cox, in Hob-son-street, and that the allotments bo leased again for a term of 50 years, at an upset annual rental of £20 for the first 21 years, and of £30 for the rest of the term, the lessees paying for the buildings on the several allotments at a valuation to be agreed upon, 1 and paying also all costs connected with the transaction that at tho expiration of the lease tho Board pay as compensation for surrender two-thirds of tho then value of the buildings to the owner, provided that such payment do not exceed £500 in the case of each allotment. The above recommendations wore the,outcome 1 of the application of the lessees in question for reduction of ground rents, in support of which Messrs. Cameron and Cox waited upon the Board at List meeting. The oliairman said this proposal would give the lessees a reduction in ground rental from £26 to £20, besides starting a new lease. The r«eommendatioH9 were adopted. New North Road School Site: On the recommendation of the Property Committee it was decided to decline the offer of the Board of Education to surrender the lease of the school site in the New North Road, but to offer to extend the time, say, for two years, during which term the school buildings must be erectod.
Salaries: Reporting on the headmaster's suggestion as to the increase of salaries to Messrs. MoMahon and McCuUoiigii, masters at the school, the Finance Committee recommended tiiat the increases be granted. This was agreed to. Coronation Ensign: A letter was received from the Education Department advising the forwarding of a large New Zealand Ensign, which the Minister hoped would be used at the Grammar School on Coronation Day. It was decided to thank the Department for the presentation. Reductions in Rental: An application was received from the executors of the late Mr. J. P. King (through Mr. A. Hanna, solicitor) asking for reductions in ground rental of properties in Alten Road. It was decided to refer the matter to the Property Committee to eousidei and to go into the whole question of such applications, it being the opinion of members that some hard and fast rule should be laid down in dealing with them.
